Travel Guest Post: Sample the Possibilities of an India Ocean Vacation

Stretching from the western shores of Australia to the southern cape of Africa, the Indian Ocean is the world’s third largest body of water. Whether you are looking for a tropical island retreat or immersion in foreign culture, Indian Ocean destinations can offer it. While the climate of each location is greatly affected by westerly winds, the Indian Ocean is the warmest in the world. Newcomers to the area should familiarize themselves with several destinations and seasonal weather patterns.

Goa

On the western shore of the Indian subcontinent, Goa mixes the country’s finest beaches with a stranger version of Indian culture than found elsewhere. Goa was a Portuguese colony for 400 years, and it hosts a combination of architecture and events to prove it. Some beaches have been spoiled by over-development, so if you want to avoid the tourist crowds, journeys north as far as Arombol and south toward Palolem will be most rewarding. Mild temperatures between 70-88 degrees Fahrenheit persist from October through March. April and May are the hottest months. The monsoon season of June through September is a favorite of local residents.

Zanzibar

Tanzania is an awe-inspiring destination for nature lovers and amateur anthropologists. The number of wildlife reserves and friendly tribes will leave any visitor craving more. Part of Tanzania, the island of Zanzibar is a microcosm of the country and accessible by ferry from Dar es Salam. First-time travelers will enjoy the northern and eastern shores of the island where beaches are interspersed with mangroves and tropical palms. Fishing villages ring the island, and hotels are relatively inexpensive compared to the mainland. Zanzibar offers excellent opportunities for snorkeling the coral reefs, dolphin watching, and even glimpsing ancient sea turtles. June through February are most comfortable in terms of temperature and humidity, but the year-round temperature rarely gets above 100 degrees Fahrenheit. March, April, and May bring extreme humidity.

Mauritius

This island is located southwest of the Indian coast and about 560 miles east of Madagascar. Remnants of the colonial period appear in the cuisine and are combined with Chinese flavors brought by 19th-century migrants. Nature lovers will find plenty to do, including reserve hiking, horseback riding among the volcanic peaks, ziplining, and touring the natural wonders of Ganga Talao temple.

Mauritius features two tourist seasons each year: April-May and September-December. The island is blessed, however, with year-round temperatures and humidity in mild ranges. The primary changes in weather occur geographically with the eastern shores of the island receiving the wetter, westerly winds.

Arabian Peninsula

The two countries of the peninsula offer wildly different possibilities for tourists. Yemen is a cultural fortress of Islam. Oman is a better choice for nature enthusiasts. Both offer plenty of medieval architecture, cultural events like camel racing, and outdoor activities. Most of the coastline is composed of rocky cliffs, which makes these destinations great for paragliding, trekking, and diving to the coral reefs and ancient shipwrecks. October to April, excluding the month of Ramadan, offers the best weather for tourism. June through September are the hottest months and uncomfortably humid for visitors.

There is no end to travel destinations along the coasts of the Indian Ocean. Mainland destinations are more subject to the monsoon season, and island destinations tend to be less affected by the wet-dry season changes the further they are located from mainland areas. The cultures and climate make these destinations worthwhile, but it is necessary to research your destination thoroughly beforehand.

Lifestyle Guest Post: Creating an Outdoor Living Space

Creating an outdoor space to enjoy during the summer has one ever-present problem — the summer heat. The very warmth that can make your backyard especially inviting can drive you back into the air conditioning. When you are creating or redeveloping your patio or other outdoor space, make it a priority to think ahead and try to maximize cooling opportunities. There are ultimately only three ways to make a really hot day bearable: shade, airflow and evaporative cooling.

Shade

Most of the time when we are looking for shade, we are hoping for a well-placed tree or a patio covering. When you are constructing an outdoor space from scratch, this can be planned from the get-go. Climbing grape vines, arbors, shade trees in containers and patio umbrellas are all excellent shade providers that can be incorporated into your new outdoor room. Consulting with a nursery can provide a well-chosen variety of vine or ivy to provide a cooling, living canopy as well as tasty and decorative fruit. Arbors are relatively simple construction projects that can be handled by brave do-it-yourselfers and they provide a customizable amount of shade, tailored to your space. Sometimes moving the entire outdoor room to the other side of the house or nearer a large tree can change a pretty, but unused space into an outdoor family room that is occupied most of the time.

Airflow
In many environments, a simple fan can markedly change the character of a patio or other outdoor area that isn’t too hot but feels “stuffy” in the summer. A normal household fan will not last long outdoors, but many decorative fan companies are producing indoor/outdoor models that can gently move a lot of air with almost no noise. The newer fans can come with remote controls or thermostats to run automatically. Additionally, several companies are now actively attempting to market new designs of fans that move more air using less power than ever before.

Evaporative cooling

When water evaporates it actually leaves behind cooler air than before. This phenomenon has been exploited for decades in evaporative coolers. Evaporative coolers were more common before the rise of affordable air conditioning. They tend to work much better in hot, dry conditions than in high humidity. Outdoors, this principle is utilized normally through a simple hose and nozzle system. Pressurized water from an outdoor faucet is directed through tubing that is mounted around the patio or other hot area and is sprayed out of small nozzles in a mist. This mist can either be directed through a fan or simply sprayed in the general area people will be enjoying. As the water evaporates, some of the heat is removed, often making a sweltering day enjoyable.

There are other factors to keep in mind when summertime comes around and you want to beat the heat. If keeping the sun off your space is not an option, perhaps patio furniture with removable cushions is in order. When it is time to go outside and enjoy your patio or porch, out come the still-cool cushions from an outdoor storage box. The most important thing to keep in mind when you are trying to make your new space livable is the comfort of that space’s users. A beautiful patio or garden bench is just a pretty sculpture if it is too hot for relaxation. Make sure you and your loved ones can enjoy the summer safely and happily this year by planning ahead and taking the necessary steps to keep it cool out there!

Travel Guest Post: Euro Disney Hits 20

Summary: It has 20 years since Euro Disney – or Disneyland Paris as it’s now known –opened, and the park has seen many exciting changes over the years, not least the introduction of Eurostar services.

This is the kind of news that makes me feel old – Disneyland Paris is 20 years of age in 2012. I remember when the theme park first opened, when I was a young child. It was known as the Euro Disney Resort then and my parents arranged a special trip in honour of my tenth birthday. It was definitely one of our best holidays. But the resort’s changed a lot since then, so I’m starting to think it might be time to take another trip.

A potted history of Disneyland Paris: The United States has had its own Disney resort since 1955, when Disneyland opened in California. In 1971, Disneyworld opened in Florida and in 1983, Tokyo Disneyland was launched. So finally in 1983, the bosses at Disney decided it was time for Europe to have some fun with Mickey Mouse too.

So why exactly did it take 10 years for this dream to come to life? Well, the planning process reportedly started with a list of over 1000 sites across the continent, before finally being whittled down to four – two in France and two in Spain. Although officials were said to prefer the climate in Spain, Paris eventually won them over thanks to its accessible location.

It certainly turned out to be a good decision. As well as short drive or plane ride away from several European hubs, travellers in the UK can now take advantage of Eurostar breaks too, as there’s a direct train from St Pancras station in London to Disneyland Paris.

Construction began on the theme park in 1988, before being opened as the Euro Disney Resort in 1992 and renamed as Disneyland Paris in 1994. It was initially hit by some controversy from French cultural commentators, who denounced the encroachment of what they felt was brash American consumerism in France. Even today, I’ve met some French people who lament the presence of Disneyland Paris in their country. But I think there’s a lot less opposition now than there once was, especially since the resort is the most visited attraction in Europe – even more than the Eiffel Tower.

Visiting in 2012: Since 1992, there have been a lot of changes, including the introduction of the Space Mountain Ride and, of course, the extension of Eurostar services to the resort. There are more all-inclusive Eurodisney holiday packages too, which is great – I think my parents only had a few to choose from when we visited all those years ago. Some of them may be running special offers for the 20th anniversary year, for instance, free accommodation for children, so I’d advise you to check the website before you book anything.

For anyone interested in the history of Disneyland Paris, I’d really recommend this book: Once Upon an American Dream: The Story of Euro Disneyland (2000) by Andrew Lainsbury. It’s got loads of information that’s interesting and insightful, but it’s published in the US, so might be a bit pricey.

Travel Guest Post: Singapore Travel Tales

The first thing you notice when you step onto the streets of Singapore is the mix of cultures. Chinese and Indian cultures collide here and mingle with Thai, Malaysian, and many other ethnicities. And with your arrival, you add to the melting pot. The entire atmosphere is welcoming and inclusive, making you feel right at home even when you are thousands of kilo-meters away.

The city itself is extremely clean, and while police are not overly present, there are many unusual laws and customs to be abided by. For example, chewing gum is not allowed, and littering can garner you a considerable fine. Singapore goes to great lengths to keep itself free of rubbish it is unusual to see empty soda cans or food wrappers lying on the ground. Cleanliness is favoured by all in the city. Health is as well, with most unhealthy items (cigarettes, alcohol, junk food) carrying pretty heavy taxes. But with such a huge selection of restaurant’s to dine at, you probably won’t be buying many of these things anyway.
Speaking of food, Singapore’s cultural diversity makes for a highly customizable dining experience that everybody will want to take advantage of, even the pickiest of eaters. All kinds of cuisine are present here, from your standard chain restaurants and snack kiosks to high-end international fine dining. What you’ll really want to check out, though, are the traditional Singaporean dishes. Chilli crab, for instance, is just one of many odd-sounding but utterly delicious national staples – a well-cooked crab drenched in a tomato-chilli sauce that inevitably makes a huge mess but is nothing short of delectable. Seafood is found in most dishes, so those with allergies have considerably less to choose from than fish fanatics, but there are still many options available. Kaya toast is wonderful on its own or as a side at any meal. It is warm bread covered with a creamy coconut jam, often served for breakfast with coffee and eggs. Other foods to try are Singaporean variations on old favourites, such as ice kachang (shaved ice with hidden treats like beans and seeds) and roti prata (flat bread usually served with curry and topped with a multitude of delicacies).

Most visitors to Singapore will stay within the city and the traditional tourist spots and shopping malls, but for the more adventurous travellers, there are many wonderful spots to see if you just venture off the beaten path. The Haw Par Villa, or Tiger Balm Gardens, are a hidden favourite. The gardens offer free admission to their collection of Chinese statues and monuments. There are also several exhibits that go deeper into explanations of reincarnation and other topics; these can be accessed very inexpensively. And make a day trip to Changi Beach and Village which is away from the hustle and bustle of the city, this laid back area demands a walk-through. Watch boats drift through the bay and enjoy the sunset from one of the many boardwalks along the beach. There are also many vending stalls run by locals, featuring food, crafts, and souvenirs.

The longer you stay in Singapore, the more you will be able to see and do, but even just a week is enough to get a taste of this incredible region, its people, and the many treats it has to offer.

Travel Guest Post: Villa Holiday Rentals

Many of us look forward to our holiday all year, and when we get there we want to be able to relax, unwind and enjoy our time away, which is why more and more people are choosing villa holidays.

Hotels can be fantastic, but many feel they lack personality and can create a sense of detachment from Imagethe culture and beauty of the chosen destination. Villa holidays offer a fabulous sense of freedom; you don’t have to be tied down to set meal times, or mix with a group of strangers, plus you can immerse yourself in the local culture.

Hiring a villa is often the most affordable and stress-free way of taking a holiday, especially when considering holidays to Florida and other far-flung destinations. Sharing your accommodation with a group of friends or extended family can be a great way of spreading the cost of your holiday, plus you have the option of self-catering and can therefore also split the food bills. It’s also much easier to have your own kitchen when looking after the fussy eating habits of babies and toddlers.

Villa holidays are also great for families because of the freedom and space you’ll be able to enjoy; who wants to be stuck in a tiny family room with the neighbours complaining about the baby crying or the toddler’s tantrums when you can have a whole villa to relax in, and a private pool area to enjoy?

The choice of destinations when it comes to villa holidays is also extensive with holidays in Spain rating high on holiday-home rental popularity lists. Spanish destinations such as the Costa del Sol, Andalucía and the Balearic Islands offer plenty of choice and you’ll find everything from modern villas to more traditional homes with a rustic vibe.

It’s worth doing your research when looking for a villa. Make sure the accommodation fits your requirements; if you want a villa with exclusive use of a pool make sure you choose the appropriate type, and check the distances from the beach and local resort amenities if this is an important factor.

Most people choose to hire a car when renting a villa as it allows even more freedom. Without being tied to a hotel’s meal and entertainment schedule, you can head to the local supermarket each morning to stock up on delicious local produce, pack a picnic and head off into the Spanish countryside for a day of sightseeing and adventure.

But it’s not just Spain that offers great villa locations. There are destinations throughout the world where you can find a luxury home away from home. Many people forget villas are the perfect solution for Florida holidays.

For families with older children, groups of friends, and couples, holiday villas in Florida may be the answer to your holiday prayers and as with everything in America, you’ll find the accommodation here sleek, modern and well equipped. Air-conditioning comes as standard in most Florida villas and you can choose to stay in Orlando if you want to visit parks such as Walt Disney World Resort or Universal Studios, or the Gulf Coast if you’re looking for a more chilled-out break.

Again, the convenience of self-catering will appeal to families with two or more children, especially those who want to head to the theme parks as the expense of eating out can often put a strain on the wallet. Make a packed lunch in the morning, put the contents in a cool-bag and take it with you to the parks, most have picnic areas and spaces where you can eat your own food so it’s an easy and affordable alternative to dining out.

Villa holidays to Florida are also becoming increasingly popular with groups of friends who can enjoy a relaxed holiday experience together, cooking in the evenings and sharing a bottle of wine by the pool as the sun sets; it’s the ideal solution for those looking for a more up-market birthday, hen or stag celebration.

Villas provide that home away from home feeling, albeit a home with more sunshine and better views, and so you can all relax and enjoy your time away. So next time you’re considering a holiday abroad, think outside the box and think of villa holidays.
